When desires, plans, wishes and yearning roll along, we call it the ‘mind’; when they subside, we call it ‘citta’ (consciousness). When the white cloth is dirty, it is mind, when the whiteness is restored by washing, it is citta. (SSS Vol.8, p. 115)
Whoever succeeds in controlling the Citta or the Consciousness can have a vision of the Atman. Consciousness is the grown up tree; the seed is the ‘ego’, the feeling of ‘I’. When the seed ‘I’ is cast aside, all the activities of the consciousness also vanish automatically. (JV, p. 10)
The Citta is the source and support of Resolution. All resolution, decision and plans are the products of the Citta; they are of its form; they originate there; they are registered there. (UV, p. 57)
The Citta has to be saturated with Brahmic endeavour; then only will it be an instrument of Liberation, freed from the shackles of Sankalp, mind cannot free itself as the Citta can. The citta can discriminate between resolutions; it tests them, as duty and not-duty and justifies with proper reasons the classification it has made. There can be no proper Karma without citta. Citta is concerned with chinta (contemplation).Buddhi (intellect) is the power of discrimination. It is the Divine faculty by which one determines what is transient and what is permanent. (SSS Vol.24, p. 108)
