As a fish is very fond of living in water, just so is man fond of living on the basis of satisfying desires. In the circumstances, a great effort is needed to give up the old habits of living by satisfying desires. (MBI, p. 154)
Examine a desire-thought before following it into action. If intelligence, discrimination and conscience activise that the desire is neither harmful to oneself nor to another person, then go ahead. Obviously, intelligence and discrimination must be both acute and honest; otherwise we will deceive ourselves and continue to maintain the limitations of a private world constructed out of satisfaction of desires. This is the meaning of title. ‘A Ceiling on Desires’, as contrasted to a suppression of all desires. (MBI, p. 158)
Kamam Karmanasanam, desire is the destroyer of Karma (action). Krodham Jnananasanam (Anger is the destroyer of wisdom). ‘Lobham Bhaktinasana (Greed is the destroyer of devotion). (SSS Vol.21, p. 68)
Today we are witnessing attachments growing without limit. Attachment to the body, to relations, to education or to the acquisition of knowledge is essential to limits. Even with regard to desirable objects. It is essential to limit one’s desires. ‘Na sreyo niyamam vina’, there can be no happiness without restraint of desires. When there is no restraint, excessive desires become an evil. It leads to misery. When we strive to control desire, in due course, it develops into ‘Vairagya’ - non-attachment or renunciation. (SSS Vol.21, p. 69)
Krishna said, ‘The one who becomes a slave of his desires becomes a slave of the entire world. The one who makes desires his slave becomes the master of the entire world’. (DBG, p. 144)
Desire is storm, Greed is whirlpool, Pride is precipice; Attachment is avalanche, Ego is volcano, Discard desire and you are liberated. (Vedavani, p. 179)
(Erwin Schroedinger) ( Werner Heisenberg)
Heisenberg, a great philosopher, after studying various sciences, embarked on an investigation of the link between the physical sciences and spirituality. He discovered the great secrets contained in the Yoga shastras. He observed, ‘Master the mind: be a mastermind.’ Another great scientist, Schroedinger, found that science and spirituality were integrally connected and that in fact spirituality was the basis for science. He also noted that the growth of science had led to a multiplication of wants, which brought about a weakening of man’s will and intelligence. He declared: ‘More desires, more despair.’ (SSS Vol.28, p. 149)
Do no give any chance for that vile thing, despair, to eat into the vitals of activity and effort. Despair is a sin against God; when He is in you, why do you lose hope. That is why the Lord says, when I am here, why do you fear? Be always joyful.optimistic and courageous. (SSS Vol.1, p. 138)
