Five Matas (Mothers)

Women, who were all these centuries, the bulwarks of Indian culture, the guardians of Indian spiritual wealth are fast succumbing to the flimsy attractions of foppish culture, as is evident from the modes of living and the social behaviour of many educated women. This is the result of the artificial and empty system of education, as well as the subtle pulls of cheap literature and shoddy films. Women are the mothers of the coming generation; they are the teachers of that generation during the first five years of life. Here, in Bharat, according to tradition, you have five mothers almost equally venerable. These five are the most revered and ranked along with one’s own mother. Who are those five mothers? The mother is the first of the five matas (mothers), that the Indian child encounters. Dehamata (the mother that gave birth to this body). It is this mother who has given you birth, struggled hard serving you and sacrificed everything for your comfort and upbringing. So, she has to be revered. Gomata (the cow that gives sustaining milk). It is the cow that gives you milk and helps to nurture and strengthen your body. You have to be grateful to the cow. Bhumata (the land that grows the crops which feed the body). It is on the earth that we live. We cultivate the land and grow grains. All the metal ores we extract and use are treasured in the Earth. Desha-mata (the native country gives protection, care, love, rights and chances to serve and elevate oneself to one’s full height). Your culture, tradition, and rich heritage are all embodied in this land where you are born. You have to treat your desha, country, as your mother, motherland. and fifth is Veda-mata (the heritage of spiritual treasure that reveals the aim and purpose of human life and takes one step by step, towards the Goal of Self-realisation). Mother Scripture. It is the Vedas, that teach you the aim and the goal of life while showing you the spiritual path as well. We should be grateful to Mother Scripture, as we should be to our mothers.

The dehamata must reveal to the child the glories of all the other four; so her responsibility is the greatest and most crucial. That is part of the general task. Every act of Mine, every word, will have only that goal in view. (SSS Vol. 6, p. 204) & (Satyopanishad, p. 27)
