Human Body

Instead of considering the human body, constituted by elements as one single unit, the Vedantins say there are three units. (Sarira Traya, the Doctrine of the Three bodies - wiki) They are: Sthula deha (the gross body), Sukshma deha (the subtle body) and Karana deha (the causal body) . Some aver that there is a fourth, called Mahakarana deha (the Super causal Body) also.

Sthula deha is constituted of the twenty-five elemental principles (see Elements & Pancha bhutas) It has been assigned the name of Jagrat, the Waking State.

Sukshma body constitutes of the five Jnanedriyas, the five tanmatras, the five Pranas, the Manas and Buddhi. These seventeen categories combine to constitute the subtle body. Sukshma sarira is known as Taijasa. This avastha is known as Swapna, the Dream State.

In the Casual, the Karana deha, the Cittam or Consciousness is in association with the knower, the Knowing Principle, the Jnata. This is known as Prajna. The state is Sushupti, Deep sleep.

The fourth one is the Super-Causal Body. The Pure Consciousness unmixed with any Tattva or elemental principle, the Witness Eternal, the Self Luminous and is referred to as Mahakarana Deha. It is known as Hiranyagrabha. It is stateless, it is beyond all states of consciousness and so it is described as Akshara Purusha. (PraV, pp. 4-6)

The human body is like a rented house. An individual is living in that rented house. The individual has really to pay the rent to the owner of the house, namely God. He should not pay the rent to the body. In truth, God is the owner of the house in which we live as He owns the body. (SSB 1972, p. 25)

The human body, so filled with skills, so capable of great adventures, is a gift from God to each of you, It has to be used as a raft on which you can cross this never calm sea of change that lies between birth and death, bondage and liberation. Pursue nobler ends; have grander ideals; sensory pleasures are trinkets, trivialities. (SSS Vol.28, p. 23)

The human body is a prey to 386 types of diseases. These are caused by three main factors that are related to physical health. They are Vata (Wind), Pitta (Bile) and Sleshma (Phlegm). Wind is the cause of 8 diseases, while 84 diseases arise from bile disorders and 222 from phlegm. For the disease of fluorosis, bile and phlegm are the causes. While there are curative medicines for several diseases, there are some diseases which are incurable. (SSS Vol.27, p. 48)

Having been born as a human being, it is our duty the health of our body in order to realise this truth. Nevertheless, the human body is bound to perish one day or the other, however carefully we may protect it.

This fragile human body consists of the five elements.

No one knows when he would have to drop such a feeble frame.

The scholars say, the life expectancy of a human being is one years;

but, that cannot be taken as granted

No one knows when he would die-

Whether in the childhood or in youth or in the old age;

Similarly, whether in town or in the forest or in the midst of water.

But, death is certain for a human being.

Hence, one must be wise enough to realise his true nature, while he is still alive.

This is the truth revealed by Sai.
