Hypnosis and hypnotism are not modern terms. These are found in the Vedas. Since people do not know these facts, they find new terms or new words for these concepts. Hypnotism is referred to in the Shastras (scriptures) as Atindriya shakti (power beyond the senses). It means that one having this power can converse with one who is in deep sleep. Even the dead will come and converse with one having such power. Not only this, one can enter the mind of another sitting in front of him.

One with such powers can perceive a far away object. Hence, the term Atindriya. It is not the object of the senses, since it is beyond them. Our ancients possessed such powers. These powers are obtained by karma only. Therefore, all our actions should be pure and sacred. For this, purity of mind, heart, and thoughts is absolutely necessary. Only a person with pure body, mind, and intellect can be called a true human being. (SSS Vol.32 Part II, p. 52)
