Japa(m)

Soft prayer or repetition of the name of God. (Glossary for the Vahinis)

The best tool to dig a well to that (the spring of fresh and sweet water in the heart - God) inexhaustible source and savour its sweetness is japa, the repetition of the name of the Lord. (CWBSSB, p. 123)

Japa is that which fosters the formation and birth of worthiness and Godliness. ‘Ja’ stands for Janma or life, and ‘Pa’ for Pavitram (holy or sacred). So Japa is that which sanctifies life. (NNSG Vol.7, p. 16)

The one single fruit of Japam and Dhyanam is this: the conversion of the out-faced into the in-faced; the turning towards of one’s eye, the inward eye seeing the Reality of Atmic Bliss. For this transformation, one has to be always active and hopeful, regardless of the time taken and the difficulties encountered. One should not count the cost, the time or the trouble On should await the descent of the Lord’s Grace. The patient waiting is itself part of the tapas of Dhyana. Sticking unfalteringly to the vow is the tapas. (DhyV, pp. 9-10)
