Manu

(Matsya protecting Vaivasvata Manu and the seven sages at the time of Deluge/Great Flood)

The first father of mankind; author of the codes of righteous conduct (Dharma Shastras); son of Surya (the sun) and father of Vaivasvata Manu, the present progenitor of mankind. (Glossary for the Vahinis)

Sage Manu, the ancestral lawgiver after whom man is referred to as Manuja--(the child of Manu). (SSS Vol.18, p. 79)

Man is called Manuja, the one who has come from Manu, the primal author of the Dharma shastra (the Code of Conduct for all mankind). (SSS Vol.27, p. 83)

It is righteousness and justice that constitute the basis for this objective world. Emperor Manu established, taught and propagated these two principles. He had two sons, Uttanapada and Priyavrata. The elder one Uttanapada had two wives, Suniti and Surichi who gave birth to two sons Dhruva and Uttama in that order. (Beacons of Divine Wisdom, Part 1, pp. 158-159)

Manuja = Manu + Ja (born of), meaning, child of Manu. All humans should behave like children of Manu, embodying his characteristics. Manu always followed Dharma. He defined justice for the good of humanity. The law followed in every court today is based on Manu’s exposition. Thus, it is our duty to practice Dharma as laid down by Manu. (SSB 1995, p. 95)

Because man is a descendant of Manu he is termed Manuja (the offspring of Manu). Manu laid down the rule that man should be prepared even to sacrifice his life for the cause of Truth. But owing to the ravages of time, place and circumstances, we are witnessing the opposite of Manu s injunction. For today s man, falsehood has become sweet and pleasing. Truth has become repugnant. (SSS Vol.24, p. 51)
