Philosophy

Philosophy is not religion. It is love for God. It is cultured by reciting the Name, singing Bhajans, thinking spiritual thoughts, desiring union with God. Union with God - as the bubble upon breaking, finds itself the whole ocean. From the cultivation of philosophy comes will power. Without will power, knowledge is useless. (CWBSSB, p. 69)

Philosophy starts where physics ends. Physics is useful, but it is only information. Spiritual life is transformation. (CWBSSB, p. 161)

Ramanuja, Sankara and Madhwa have taught us the three basic philosophies -Dvaita, Advaita and Vishishtadvaita - the dualistic philosophy, non-dualistic thought and qualified non-dualism.Jiva, Ishvara and Prakriti are three names given to these three aspects. (SSB 1974, p.77)

Sankara was propounding Sayujya, or identity with the Lord, while Ramanuja was talking in terms of Samipya, or closeness to the Lord, and Madhwa was preaching in terms of Salokya, or living in the domain of the Lord. (SSB 1974, p.136)

Philosophy is love of wisdom, or striving for wisdom. It is a moral and intellectual science, which tries to explain the reality behind appearances by reducing the phenomena of the universe to ultimate causes, through the application of reason and law.

Philosophy is the methodical work of the intellect which aims at the knowledge and realisation of what ‘really is’. Philosophy can also be explained as the art of perfect life, the way not simply of explaining what ought to be, but of directly experiencing that which eternally exists. Philosophy to the westerner is conceptual and to the easterner is factual. (DS, p. 80)

The Atma principle of the Bharatiyas is all embracing, all revealing, all explaining and all powerful. Developing faith in the Atma principle and loving it earnestly - this is the real worship. The Atma is the one and only Loved One for man. Feel that it is more lovable than any object here or hereafter - that is the true adoration man can offer to God. This is what the Vedas teach.

They teach us that there is One who is the sovereign behind all these rules and restrictions, One who is the core of each object, each unit of energy, each particle or atom, and One under whose orders alone the five elements (ether, air, fire, water and earth) operate. Love Him, adore Him, worship Him, say the Vedas. This is the grand philosophy of Love as elaborated in the Vedas.

(BPV, p. 4)

Philosophy means love of knowledge. Knowledge is a treasure of incalculable riches. Education is the relentless pursuit of knowledge, urged by love for its value and undeterred by difficulties. (V Vahini, p. 21)

Atma is in everything. How? Look at a pot. The potter makes it with mud. The pot contains mud but mud does not contain a pot. The pot is created. In the same way, qualities are also created. So God is there in qualities but God does not have qualities. This is Vishvam (world). For this, the scientist has so many philosophies - natural, social, economic, political, and spiritual philosophies. What is this philosophy? Philosophy is an English word. This is derived from Roman language (M, p. 29)
