Questions

Questions are generally classified into four groups:

  1. Trivial
  2. Low
  3. Passable and
  4. Praiseworthy

Questions that are raised in order to drag another into a controversy and later, to inflict a humiliating defeat on him, are trivial. Questions that are put in order to demonstrate one’s own cleverness and skill are ‘low’. Questions which announce the intellectual equipment and reasoning faculty of the questioner are ‘passable’ and belong to the third class. Questions that are asked with the sincere desire to remove one’s doubts are ‘praiseworthy’ and belong to the highest class. (RKRV Part II, pp. 22-23)

Whatever work you do must be converted into divine work; it must be transformed into worship. Whatever work you do, you must question, ‘Is it worth doing? Will it lead me towards the goal?’ (DBG, p. 147)

Put two questions to yourself. First is the intention pure, born out of Prema, and based on Satya? If the answer is ‘Yes’, then it is dharma. Second, what will be the consequence – does it result in shanti, joy for you and for others, no pain to you and to others? Does it make for trikarna shuddhi (purity of thought, word and deed) as well as equanimity? If yes, you can go ahead. In short, sensual life is adharma; spiritual life is dharma. Do unto others as you wish them to do unto you. (NNSG Vol.4, p. 177)

What relation should we desire with God? What attitude results in what relation? What spiritual effort yields what goal? Enquire into these issues. You will repent later if such questions are not answered now. Lake an effort to know everything. Awareness is life. You must know what is good and what is bad. Then take the good to heart and renounce bad. (SSB 1995, p. 46)
