People have read much, but how much have they applied their reading in life? They repeat that the senses are enemies of the higher life, but they continue to be their slaves. Have a pure vision, then you will not find faults in others.
Have a pure sense of hearing, then you will not relish the scandals regarding others scattered by foolish men, who do not know that they are but scandalising themselves. Care more for Sarveshvara chinta - thought of the Lord of all, not Sarira chinta, thought of the care and upkeep of the perishable body. (SSS Vol.4, p. 164)
If you want to read history and lead your life accordingly, you have to take such instances as examples as Harishchandra. Similarly, Emperor Sibi, Emperor Bali and Sage Dadhichi also followed the path of sacrifice. It is because of such illuminous characters, Indian history is considered to be sacred and enlightening. Socially, politically and geographically, the history of India is outstanding. Even great figures like Einstein disappear from history if they do not have character.
It is hardly 40 years since our independence but can we remember any of the personalities who led this country? We remember only a few! But what about the age to which Harishchandra, Satyavanta, Dharmaja and such belonged to? Even they lived ages ago, their fame is eternal. Their fame is immortal. Their lives are immortal. Such people only make history. We will have to follow such people by considering them as ideals and inspiration. (M, p. 21)
