Reason

There are three reasons for man to be born. One is sin, the second is an unfulfilled desire or some experience, the third is lack of knowledge, or ignorance. These three constitute the basis of our birth. Valmiki has stated in his Ramayana that uttering the name of Rama will enable us to free ourselves from the three shackles, which lead to rebirth. (SSB 1974, p. 243)

Logic and intellectual investigation can give only partial accounts of the Truth. Everything in creation has many phases and many angles. Reason can observe only from one angle; it can see only one phase. The intellect that has been purified and clarified through the activities (Karma) laid down in the Vedas can succeed in observing both phases. Without undergoing the process of purification and clarification, reason can work only within the bounds of the material world. So, the conclusions that it presents before us can only be partially true. But, the intellect subjected to the processes of cleansing and sharpening in the Vedic way, can serve us by presenting a picture of the full Truth of the objective world. Most of the other faiths rely on principles reached by reason, not subjected to these disciplines taught by the Vedas. Bharatiyas have the Shastras, which illumine far beyond the bounds and limits of the temporary and the temporal. (SSVahini, pp. 152-153)

Krishna is Paramatma; Arjuna is Jiva-atma; Krishna is Purushottama; Arjuna is Narottama. That is the reason why they are the ideal Guru-Shishya. (GV,  p. 95)

The primary reason you have acquired this body is to enable you to engage in activities which allow you to reap the rewards of your past actions, you past karma. But why did you accumulate this Karma, in the first place? The reason for Karma is Raga and Dvesha, the desire or attachment you have for some things and dislike or repulsion you have for other things. Then what is the reason for this attraction and repulsion? The reason is duality. You believe that this world is real and is filled with objects and things which are separate from yourself. Where did this duality come from? The reason for this duality is ignorance, the dark well that covers the knowledge of your true reality. You have forgotten the fundamental unity of all beings; you have become unaware of the divine basis of all things. You have lost sight of the Atma, your real Self. It is on account of this ignorance, that you experience so much grief and sorrow. If you want to be free of this darkness of ignorance, you must obtain the light of wisdom. The only thing that can remove darkness is light, so also, the only thing that can remove ignorance is wisdom, or spiritual knowledge. Ignorance has covered the knowledge of divinity, and you are not able to perceive the truth. Just as the embers of a fire are covered by ashes, the ashes of ignorance have covered your wisdom, and, therefore, you are not able to know your own reality. (DBG, p. 135)

The most important reason for all these sorrows is the weakness of the senses. Keep the senses strong and under control, put your mind on the right path, and have a firm resolve. The Bhagavad Gita declares that you should control the senses, not that you should destroy them. (DBG, p. 142-143)

Do you think I would confront you with pain where there not a reason for it? Open your heart to pain as you do now for pleasure, for it is My Will, wrought by Me for your own good. Welcome it as a challenge. Do not turn away from it. Turn within and derive the strength to bear it and benefit by it. It is all My plan to drive you by the pangs of unfulfilled need, to listen to My Voice, which, when heard dissolves the ego and the mind with it. It is like baking a cake. I stir, I knead, I twist, I bake you. I drown you in tears, I scorch you in sobs. I make you sweet and crisp, an offering worthy of God. I have come to reform you. I won’t leave you until I do that. Even if you stray away before you become a successful sadhaka, I will hold on to you. You cannot escape from Me. (HM, p. 61)

There are important reasons for the birth of human being. These three reasons are sin, agitation and ignorance. Because of sin that we commit we get a rebirth as punishment. Because of lack of peace in an agitated mind, we get rebirth. Because of ignorance and lack of knowledge, we get rebirth. If at one stroke, we get rid of sin, agitation in our mind and ignorance, the only is to constantly think of the name of Rama. (SSB 1977, p.6)
