It is of outmost importance for every human being wishing to attain success in the spiritual field, to achieve three types of character, namely Purity, Patience and perseverance. This is called Shilatrayam (three-fold character). One may be highly educated, wealthy, a high-ranked officer, Scientist or a Scholar, if one has no character of the type mentioned above, he or she is equivalent to living corpse. All these qualifications and positions are sheer waste. The world may recognise the physical beauty; but God recognises only the inner purity and character. A life without character is equivalent to a rock. Truth is the foundation for good character. Truth does not mean merely abstaining from speaking untruth. Truth should form the support and sustenance for one’s life. One should be prepared to sacrifice his everything for the sake of Truth. The Universe is subservient to Truth. It is because of Truth, the world carries on its activities. Absence of Truth makes a human being live in fear. Truth ensures fearlessness. Truth drives away fear and fosters divinity in man. In order to attain such fearlessness and divine qualities, one has to strive from childhood itself. It is only when one speaks Truth that one will acquire courage, fearlessness and joy. While speaking the Truth, one should not be afraid of the result, or be concerned about loss or gain that will accrue to him, irrespective of the result, one should always adhere to Truth. Just as the foundation to a building or the roots to a tree, so also Truth should be the support and sustenance for our life. A direct example of this philosophy is King Harischandra himself.
