Speech is so powerful that it indicates one’s character, reveals one’s personality, educates others and communicates experience and information. So be vigilant about words. Slip while walking, the injury can be repaired; but slip while talking, the injury is irreparable. (SSS Vol.4)
Speech should be free from fanaticism or passionate excitement. The very life style gets defiled by these emotions. They cloud the issue and cause great harm. Nervous breakdown occurs when emotion runs high, and words thus spoken hurt others more. Remember that the words you utter get recorded on the tape of your own heart. They come up into your memory off and on and warn you against losing control again. (WDL, pp. 87-88)
Speech, the use of words, is charged with tremendous power. Words do not cost anything but they are priceless. So, they have to be used with care. They must be employed not for gossip, which is barren, but for pure and productive purposes only. The ancients recommended the vow of silence in order to purify speech of its evils. A mind turned inwards towards an inner vision of God and speech turned towards outer vision both will promote spiritual strength and success. (SV90, p. 189)
