The Vedic Mantra with which the offering is given to Gods is ‘I propitiate the three-eyed one, the fragrant, the promoter of strength and sweetness of light and happiness’. The three eyes signify many things, which constitute the Divine; the Sun, Moon, Fire which symbolises heat and light; the Gross, Subtle and Causal, which symbolise the embodiments of the manifold manifestations of the One: Will; Work and Wisdom, which symbolise the operational channels of the One Sovereign Power, Deed, Duty, symbolising the sense of I which is the shadow of the one in the many. (SSS vol.10)
Shiva is praised as Tryambakam, that is, three-eyed; the eyes are held to be eyes that see into the past and the future, as well as the present; but, they represent also the three urges namely, desire, activity and knowledge---thirsts that move men and decide his fate. These three urges make all beings kin in the Divine bond; those who serve beings with love and reverence can contact this core of being and save themselves. They will see in all, the unmistakable reflections and images of the God whom they have enshrined in their hearts. (SSS vol.10)
Inaugurating the Conference of the All India Sri Sathya Sai Seva Dal, Baba said:
Feel that everyone is Tryambakam, three-eyed, manifesting as Will-Work-Wisdom, Doer-Duty-Deed, Strength-Sweetness-Light. Feel the God in them, and offer whatever service you can, with discriminating skill, with no fear of compulsion and no thought of compensation. You need wear no uniform, nor parade a badge. A person in distress need not plead for help. Since it is your nature to give and forgive, look into his eyes with compassion and lend him the hand of a brother. Love is borne in the womb of Seva; Love grows through Seva; God is Love: Love is God. This is the truth I have come to teach. Scatter the seeds of Love in dreary hearts and these will sprout into blossoms of Love, which will fill the air with fragrance; when drops of Love are rained, river of Love will murmur ecstatically through the vales; and, every child, bird, beast and pebble will sing the song of Love.’ (SSSm Vol.3)
