Bhasmasura

Sage who reduced himself to ashes through misuse of boons from Shiva. (Glossary for the Vahinis)

mohini

(Mohini and Bhasmasura)

There was one demon king by name Bhasmasura. He did penance and pleased Lord Shiva. He prayed to Shiva to granthim a boon that would give him the power to turn anybody into ashes the momenthe lays his hands on his head. Shiva granted the boon. Thus, intoxicated with this new found power, Bhasmasura began laying his hand indiscriminately on the heads of all those persons he found near him. Naturally, according to the boonhe got from God, they died and were burnt to ashes. He became so bad, sohorrible, and so highly egoistic that he decided to place his hand even on the head of Shiva, the very giver of the boon. Then Lord Vishnu took the form of abeautiful dancer Mohini, and started dancing in front of Bhasmasura who, excited by her enchanting beauty, also started dancing along with her. In the course of gestures and postures, Mohini had suddenly put her hand on her headand Bhasmasura did the same thing. The moment he placed his hand on his head he died. So by denying God, man is ruining himself. (Satyopanishad, p. 17)

Bhasmasura wanted that everything he touched should be reduced to ashes. What happened finally? He reduced himself to a heap of ashes. All evil qualities, anger, hatred, etc., are destructive. (SSS Vol.33, p. 227)

Those who find fault with the Lord are of four types:

  1. Persons who have no interest at all in matters related to God.
  2. Persons who on account of individual spite cannot endure another’s greatness.
  3. Those who have neither personal experience, nor contact nor knowledge of anything and so merely manufacture stories based on hearsay to which they have become enslaved.
  4. Persons who come with some worldly desire, and who accuse the Lord, as an excuse for the failure caused by their own destiny.

Only these four types of people clamour as you say; the others will not shout or jump about like puppets. Even if they do not have personal experience, when they hear such stories, they will just analyse them within themselves and arrive at conclusions, for their own satisfaction. They won’t abuse others. (San Vah, pp. 13-14)
