Bhavani Shankara

There is only one Fundamental Power, which is the embodiment of Shiva-Shakti. This principle of Shiva-Shakti is all pervasive. This world has a very significant name, Bhavani-Shankara. Bhavani means earnestness and Shankara, total faith. It means that the world is based on the twin principles of earnestness and faith. Bhavani and Shankara are inseparable, interdependent and all pervasive. So, the whole world is the form of Ardhanarishvara (Androgynous). It is based on this that the terms ‘Shrimati’ and ‘Shri’ are used to address the individuals. ‘Shrimati’ denotes Bhavani and ‘Shri’ symbolises Shankara. Whatever may be the name and form you worship, you need to have earnestness and faith. Without these two, you cannot achieve anything in life.

sraddhaval labhate Jnanam

tat-parah samyatendriyah

Jnanam labdhva Param santim

(Bhagavad Gita Chapter 4, verse 39)

(earnestness leads to wisdom). It is only through faith that one can realise the divinity within. The divinity in man is the combination of Bhavani and Shankara. Without the grace of Bhavani-Shankara, all your efforts will be futile. ( DD on 19-11-1999, p. 3)

Bhavani symbolises earnestness and Shankara stands for faith. You can achieve anything in life if you have earnestness and faith. As this world is the very form of Bhavani-Shankara, it is called Ardhanarishvara Swarupa (Androgynous). It is based on this that we use ‘Shrimati’ to address ladies and ‘Shri’ to address gentleman. The ancient sages and seers said, ‘Sraddhaavan Labhate Jnanam,’ wisdom can be attained only through earnestness. You should consider faith (Vishvasa) as your life breath (Shvasa).
