The Suddha Padyami in Ashwija month was the day in which the combined powers of the three goddesses, Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati, (Iccha Shakti, Kriya Shakti and Jnana Shakti) put an end to the evil forces represented by Mahishasura (the buffalo-headed demon). Vijayadashami is the day when evil-minded Ravana, who was well versed in all the sciences and very powerful, was destroyed. Vijayadashami is also the day when the Asura King, Ravana was destroyed and Shri Rama was crowned at Ayodhya. It is the Day on which great Vikramaditya ascended his bejeweled throne as a boon. It is also the anniversary of the passing of the founder of Jainism, Mahavira. (SSS Vol.21 pp.245-246)
